Kombucha and Probiotic Misconceptions: Live Cultures, Strain Specificity, and Reading Microbiome Results
'Contains live cultures' is not 'is a probiotic', probiotic effects are strain-specific rather than species-specific, and pasteurised products contain nothing live. Corrections on kombucha, probiotics and how to read microbiome findings. ## About the word "probiotic" **"Contains live cultures" is not "is a probiotic".** The strict definition requires a defined strain, an adequate dose, and a demonstrated benefit *for that strain*. Fermented foods generally carry undefined and variable communities at unmeasured doses. See Probiotic: Why the Strict Definition Excludes Most Fermented Foods. **Probiotic effects are strain-specific, not species-specific.** Evidence for *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* GG says nothing about a different *L. rhamnosus* strain. Marketing that cites genus-level research while selling an unrelated strain is claiming more than the evidence supports. **"Probiotic" is not a protected label term in many jurisdictions**, so its presence on packaging is not evidence the definition is met. **Pasteurised products contain no live cultures.** A large share of commercial kombucha is pasteurised. Heat-treated preparations belong to the *postbiotic* category, not the probiotic one. ## About kombucha specifically **The dominant organisms are not the studied probiotic genera.** Kombucha is driven by acetic acid bacteria and yeasts, not the *Lactobacillus* and *Bifidobacterium* strains that carry the clinical evidence base. **Composition varies between batches from the same producer**, which is the core reason a standardised dose claim is impossible. **The popular health claims run ahead of the evidence.** Blood-pressure, cancer-prevention and detoxification claims are not supported by controlled human trials of plain kombucha. **The strongest positive trial was not testing plain kombucha.** The 2025 Spanish RCT that found reduced triglycerides and increased *Bifidobacterium* used **fibre-enriched** kombucha, and the authors describe it as a synbiotic. The added inulin plausibly accounts for much of the effect, so the result should not be cited as evidence for ordinary kombucha. **The kombucha-funded trial reporting null results is a point in its favour.** The 2024 UC San Diego study was supported by a kombucha producer and still found no change in biochemical or inflammation markers. Industry funding is a reason for caution about positive findings, not about null ones. **That trial was small** — 16 in the kombucha arm, 8 controls. It is a preliminary signal, not a settled result, and it is often cited with more confidence than its sample size supports. **"SCOBY" strictly names the culture, not the disc.** The rubbery mat is a pellicle of bacterial cellulose; the living culture is throughout the liquid, which is why starter liquid matters more than the disc when starting a batch. ## About reading microbiome results **A shift in microbiome composition is not a health benefit.** "Enrichment of SCFA-producing microbes" describes which taxa are present in what proportion. It does not establish that more SCFAs were produced, and it certainly does not establish a clinical effect. Trials commonly report the compositional change alongside no movement in the markers that matter. See Short-Chain Fatty Acids: What Gut Bacteria Make From Fibre. **Isolating a promising strain from a food is not evidence about the food.** Studies showing that organisms from kombucha survive simulated digestion demonstrate something about those organisms, not that drinking kombucha delivers a therapeutic dose of them. ## Practical cautions Home brewing carries a genuine contamination risk, and brewing or storing in glazed ceramic can leach lead because of the low pH. Kombucha also contains trace alcohol, residual sugar, and caffeine carried over from the tea.
