The result on health markers was null: no significant change in biochemical parameters or circulating inflammation markers across the cohort. Microbiome analysis did show a change — enrichment of Weizmannia, a kombucha-associated probiotic genus, and of other SCFA-producing microbes. It was **small** — 16 in the kombucha arm and 8 controls — so it is a preliminary result rather than a definitive one. And it was **funded by a kombucha producer** and still reported null results on the primary health markers, which makes the modest microbiome finding more credible rather than less. **A 2025 Spanish randomised double-blind trial** (around 60 participants, six weeks) found more: reduced serum triglycerides, increased *Bifidobacterium*, and shifts in beta diversity. The crucial catch is that it tested **fibre-enriched** kombucha. The authors themselves frame the product as a synbiotic, meaning the effects are attributed to kombucha *plus* added inulin — and the fibre is doing much of the work. Practically: raw, unpasteurised kombucha plausibly adds some microbial diversity and live SCFA-producers to a diet, and as a low-sugar fermented drink it is a reasonable thing to enjoy. It is not a substitute for a characterised probiotic if you are targeting a specific effect. If you are buying it for live cultures, look for "raw" or "unpasteurised" and keep it refrigerated — that is the difference between live microbes and flavoured tea vinegar. Caveats from the literature: home-brewed batches carry contamination risk and, with certain glazed ceramic vessels, lead-leaching risk; and the drink contains trace alcohol, plus sugar and caffeine.
