A humid zone 7b in Texas and a dry zone 7b on the Mediterranean support very different plants — and plants can fail from heat as readily as from cold. The American Horticultural Society publishes a separate **Heat Zone Map**, based on the number of days above 30 °C, precisely because the hardiness map cannot answer this. **Rainfall and humidity.** Total precipitation, its seasonal distribution, and atmospheric humidity are all absent. Many plants that survive a zone's cold will fail in its wet — root rot in a mild damp winter kills plants that would have survived a colder dry one. **Growing season length.** A short cool summer may not ripen fruit or let a perennial store enough reserves, regardless of whether it survives the winter. Two places can share a minimum temperature with very different frost-free periods. **Snow cover.** Reliable snow insulates roots and crowns, often keeping soil far warmer than the air. A zone 4 with deep persistent snow can be gentler on many perennials than a zone 5 that freezes bare. **Reliability.** The zone is an average of annual extremes, so it says nothing about variance. A place that hits its minimum most years differs from one that is usually mild and occasionally brutal — and the occasional brutal year is what kills. **Microclimate.** A south-facing wall, an urban heat island, a frost hollow, or a sheltered courtyard can shift effective hardiness by a zone or more over a few metres. ## Other systems that fill the gaps - **AHS Heat Zones** — days above 30 °C, the heat counterpart. - **Köppen Climate Classification: The Standard System for World Climate Types** — full climate typology including precipitation patterns and seasonality. - **Sunset zones** — used in the western United States, incorporating season length, rainfall timing, humidity and elevation. Far more informative for that region, and not usable elsewhere. - **RHS hardiness ratings** — the UK scheme, reflecting a maritime climate where winter wet often matters more than winter cold. ## How to use zones properly As a **first-pass filter**, not a guarantee. The zone eliminates plants that certainly cannot survive your winter. Everything after that — heat, water, season length, soil, siting — is a separate question the zone was never designed to answer. This is why experienced gardeners treat the number as a starting point and defer to local observation.
