The fibre used to seal pipe threads carries a different name in every trade and language — пакля and сантехнический лён in Russian, plumber's hemp in the UK trade, oakum in its tarred form, Hanf in German, tow generically. Oakum and пакля both literally mean 'the combed-out stuff'. Felt (войлок) is an unrelated material never used for thread sealing, and confusing the two makes a well-documented topic look nonexistent.
