Beach, editor of the New York Sun, attributed sole invention to Vail. A 1904 letter from Vail's son Stephen to the New York Times, along with Vail's own correspondence compiled by his sons, makes the same case. The main counter-evidence is an 1838 letter from Vail to his father crediting Morse — written during the junior-senior dynamic in which Vail's family had advised him to stay on Morse's good side. The strong claim that "Vail invented Morse code" overstates the academic consensus, which still treats Morse and Vail as critical collaborators. The weaker claim that Vail deserves far more credit than he typically receives is uncontroversial among historians of technology.
