Invincible's Scourge Virus: A Hard Plot Hole Under the Billions-Population Framing

In the Invincible TV series (S4E2 flashback), young Nolan Grayson watches "billions and billions" of Viltrumites die from the Scourge Virus, with the corpses forming a planetary ring around Viltrum on the scale of Saturn's rings. The virus, engineered by Coalition of Planets scientists using Thaedus's defected-Viltrumite blood, was delivered via asteroid pods that scattered green respiratory mist across the planet, killing victims through hemorrhaging and organ failure within minutes to days. Roughly 50 Viltrumites survived — almost entirely those who happened to be off-world — and the subsequent Viltrumite War further reduced the count to 37 pure-bloods. The scenario has two structural problems under the billions-population framing. **Centralization vs galactic empire.** You cannot run a galactic empire while keeping all your population on one homeworld. Any Viltrumite who saw the green mist released, heard about the outbreak, or felt early symptoms could simply have flown up and waited. The virus almost certainly doesn't survive vacuum. Under the billions framing, tens of millions of Viltrumites would have had hours to days as the planet-wide die-off unfolded across distributed local outbreaks — yet apparently none used a species-native capability that makes pandemic evacuation trivial. Canon defenses exist but strain. Speed-of-onset and asymptomatic incubation explain failure to evacuate after infection. The post-Scourge Viltrumite War explains the 50→37 drop as Coalition hunting of off-world survivors. But no canonical pandemic-response protocols exist despite a millennia-old empire built around weaponizable physiology. The asteroid-delivery trick is genuinely clever for initial surprise, but doesn't account for the wave of later non-evacuations. The visual ring of bodies does dramatic work; the rigorous "how is this physically possible given canonical abilities" question isn't one the writers try to answer.
