In much of Europe, free short-stay parking is enforced with a parking disc — the driver displays their arrival time in the windscreen and the permitted duration runs from there. The failure mode is obvious: people forget to set it, set it wrong, or "adjust" it while the car sits parked. ## The automatic electronic disc An electronic parking disc replaces the dial with an LCD and a motion sensor. A MEMS accelerometer detects that the vehicle has been driven and then come to rest; on that transition the device latches the arrival time from its internal clock and displays it. Germany's regime is the reference case that most manufacturers design to: an electronic disc requires type approval from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, must set itself automatically via a motion detector without driver input, must show digits at least 2 cm high, and must carry the word for arrival time above the display. Vehicle-electronics EMC approval under ECE R10 applies as well. National rules differ across Europe, and an approved-in-one-country disc is not automatically valid everywhere — the local requirement is what governs. ## A representative product The Insmat Automatic Park is a Finnish-designed example: acceleration-sensor triggered, automatic summer/winter switching, quoted clock accuracy around ±2 minutes over two years, rated for roughly −30 °C to +80 °C, and powered by a CR2477 lithium coin cell of about 1000 mAh with a stated two-year service life.
