Elan School

**Elan School** was a private residential program in Poland, Maine that operated from 1970 to April 1, 2011. Marketed as therapy for troubled teens, its methods descended directly from the Synanon cult's attack therapy. ## Founding Founded by Joseph Ricci, a dropout from a Synanon-descendant program, and psychiatrist Gerald Davidson. Ricci wielded substantial influence in Maine politics — state senator Bill Diamond served as Elan's Director of Governmental Relations, and local law enforcement (including Sheriff Lt. Max Ashburn) was repeatedly blocked from entering past the lobby. ## Methods - **The Ring**: forced fights in a boxing ring where designated students were beaten by peers while spectators jeered and struck. Phil Williams, 15, died in 1982 of a brain aneurysm after a Ring beating. - **General meetings / attack therapy**: descended from Synanon and the Game. Students were verbally assaulted for hours. Michael Skakel was reportedly beaten in a general meeting for 6-8 hours until he 'confessed' (a central piece of evidence in the Martha Moxley murder trial). - **Peer enforcement hierarchy**: students were granted authority to punish other students, which gave staff plausible deniability. - **Degradation tasks**: shit lists, signs worn around the neck, head shavings, dressing in degrading costumes. - **Sleep deprivation** and 24-hour supervision during breakdowns. - **Escape prevention**: staff and hired trackers pursued runaways; the surrounding town of Poland was networked to return them. ## Notable deaths - **Phil Williams** (15, 1982) — died from head injuries after a Ring beating. - **Brad Glickman** (15, 1990) — shot by a farmer while running away. - **Dawn Marie Birnbaum** (17, 1993) — murdered after escape. - **Tiffany Sedaris** (49, 2013) — suicide; spent two years at Elan as a teenager. Sister of writers Amy Sedaris and David Sedaris. ## Closure Starting around 2010, former students began posting accounts on Reddit. Enrollment collapsed to about 30 students. Elan closed on April 1, 2011. Executive director Sharon Terry publicly blamed 'harsh and false attacks spread over Reddit' — effectively confirming the causal role of survivor testimony online. This is one of the few well-documented cases of Reddit producing a concrete public-interest outcome. Campus buildings were destroyed by arson in November 2024 and March 2025; two 18-year-olds were arrested. ## Cultural legacy The survivor-authored webcomic Joe vs Elan School (elan.school, 2018-2023, by 'Joe Nobody') is the definitive inside account. 771 pages across 100+ chapters. Physical copies shipped to Patreon backers in 2026 after 7-year production. Elan sits in the broader Troubled Teen Industry — still operating at ~150,000-200,000 enrolled US children as of 2026, with similar documented abuse at descendant programs.
