In engineering terms the Cooke-Wheatstone design was more elegant than Morse's contemporary single-wire instrument — the user-facing interface read letters directly off a board rather than requiring auditory decoding of dots and dashes. The American system's eventual dominance owed less to technical superiority than to infrastructure economics: a single copper wire was dramatically cheaper to string across long distances than five parallel ones, and the encoding burden could be pushed onto a small cadre of trained operators. The Cooke-Wheatstone needle telegraph remained in widespread British use for decades before being supplanted by Morse-style systems and later by teleprinters.
