Caterpillar Hydration: Why You Should Never Add a Water Dish
Caterpillars drown in tiny amounts of water because liquid enters their spiracles — the breathing pores along their sides. They get all hydration from leaves, and a water dish or direct misting is a lethal mistake.
Caterpillars breathe through spiracles — paired openings along the sides of each body segment that connect to an internal tracheal system. Water entering the spiracles cannot be expelled and floods the tracheae, causing the larva to drown in volumes that would seem trivial — a few drops on the body, a shallow dish, condensation pooled in a jar. The corollary is that caterpillars get essentially all of their water from food. Fresh leaves are typically 60-90% water by mass, and a well-fed larva on appropriate host plant is fully hydrated by default. Signs of true dehydration are visible: wrinkled or shrunken skin, darker than normal coloration, and sluggish movement. A turgid plump-skinned caterpillar producing regular frass is hydrated and needs no intervention. Three practices to avoid in captivity: do not spray or pour water directly on the caterpillar; do not place a water dish or shallow bowl inside the enclosure (drowning hazard plus raised humidity that encourages mold); do not over-mist the enclosure walls, since pooling condensation is itself a drowning risk for small larvae. The correct approach if humidity is genuinely low is to lightly mist the enclosure walls (not the caterpillar) once a day with a spray bottle, and to include a high-water-content leaf such as dandelion or lettuce alongside the primary host plant. After pupation, the soil corner should be kept barely damp using a squeeze test: a handful of soil holds its shape briefly, then crumbles, with no water dripping. Standing water rots pupae.
