Apache Wave

Apache Wave was the open-source continuation of Google Wave after Google donated the codebase to the Apache Software Foundation in December 2010. Shipped under the Wave in a Box name, it never left the Apache Incubator and was retired to the Attic on January 15, 2018.

Apache Wave was the open-source continuation of Google Wave after Google ended standalone development in August 2010. In December 2010 Google donated the Wave codebase to the Apache Software Foundation, where it entered the Apache Incubator under the name Wave in a Box (WIAB). The intent was to let organisations run their own Wave servers and federate with each other using the open Wave Federation Protocol built on XMPP. Apache Wave shipped reference server and web client code written largely in Java and GWT, along with the operational transformation engine, robot and gadget APIs, and a draft of the federation specification. Volunteer development continued through the mid-2010s, and in 2017 the SwellRT project — a fork that repositioned Wave as a real-time backend-as-a-service — merged its intellectual property back into the Apache project in an attempt to revive activity. The revival did not take hold. The project never produced a non-incubator release, contributor numbers stayed small, and security patches lagged. On January 15, 2018, the Apache board retired Apache Wave to the Attic, ending official development. The codebase remains available as a historical artefact and is occasionally referenced by researchers and by builders of collaborative editors, but is not maintained or recommended for production use.
