Ammonia (NH3): The Molecule That Feeds Half the World

Ammonia (NH3) is a pungent, water-soluble gas synthesized at industrial scale by the Haber-Bosch process, whose nitrogen fertilizer sustains roughly half of global food production. It is also a major refrigerant and cleaning agent, is toxic to humans and aquatic life, and serves as a central intermediate in the nitrogen cycle.

Ammonia is a colorless gas with the chemical formula NH3, built from one nitrogen atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms in a trigonal-pyramidal shape with a lone electron pair that compresses the bond angle to about 107 degrees. It has a sharp, pungent smell, is lighter than air, and boils at about -33 degrees Celsius, which lets it be stored and shipped as a liquid under modest pressure. Ammonia is extremely soluble in water, dissolving to form a weakly basic solution. Industrially, almost all ammonia is made by the Haber-Bosch process, which combines atmospheric nitrogen with hydrogen over an iron catalyst at high temperature and pressure. Developed by Fritz Haber and scaled up by Carl Bosch in the early twentieth century, this single reaction transformed agriculture: synthetic nitrogen fertilizer now sustains roughly half of all human food production, and an estimated half of the nitrogen in human tissue traces back to the process. Global output runs to roughly 150 million tonnes a year, the largest-volume product of the chemical industry. Around 70 to 90 percent of ammonia goes into fertilizer, either applied directly as anhydrous ammonia or converted into compounds such as Urea: From Biological Waste Product to World's Most Important Fertilizer, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate. Ammonia is also oxidized to make Nitric Acid (HNO₃): The Oxidizing Acid Behind Fertilizers, Explosives, and Gold Refining, used in fertilizers and explosives. It is increasingly explored as a carbon-free fuel and hydrogen carrier. Ammonia is toxic and corrosive: it irritates the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, with occupational exposure limits around 25 ppm. Fish and amphibians are especially vulnerable because they lack the detoxification pathways mammals use to convert it to urea. In the nitrogen cycle, ammonia is a central intermediate, produced naturally by biological nitrogen fixation and the decay of organic matter, then converted by bacteria into nitrites and nitrates that plants absorb.
